Advancing AI to understand and predict our changing environment

Artificial intelligence is transforming our ability to understand and forecast the Earth system, creating new opportunities for earlier, more accurate, and higher-resolution prediction, particularly for extreme weather and environmental hazards. Better forecasts can provide critical time for early warning and mitigation, ultimately helping to reduce impacts and save lives.

We develop novel AI and machine learning architectures that integrate Earth observations, geospatial data, remote sensing, and physical knowledge to learn complex processes across space and time. Our research advances predictive, generative, and explainable AI to extend forecast lead times, improve accuracy and spatial-temporal resolution, better capture rare and extreme events, and uncover the patterns and physical processes underlying complex Earth systems.
